FREO StreetDoctor continues to provide a limited mobile GP service to marginalised and at-risk people in Fremantle – the homeless, young people, those with mental illness, indigenous people, and injecting drug users.
FREO StreetDoctor continues to provide a limited mobile GP service to marginalised and at-risk people in Fremantle – the homeless, young people, those with mental illness, indigenous people, and injecting drug users. These vulnerable people would otherwise have difficulty accessing primary health care, whether for financial or social reasons. Their competing needs for food or accommodation often push health needs to one side.
For two evenings a week, these people can now access a GP and health worker at the mobile van. Dr Bennie Ng (far right) said establishing rapport with them is important.
“The biggest difference I can make is gaining their trust. If you sit and have a yarn about what is going on in their lives, they trust you more and you can talk about their health and explain things that can be done,” he said.
