Gestational diabetes – navigating new guidelines

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is an increasingly common metabolic disease of pregnancy, potentially leading to adverse outcomes for mother and baby.

These may occur in pregnancy itself (e.g. preeclampsia, macrosomia, complications from delivery) or in the long-term (subsequent increased risk of type 2 diabetes in mother and infant).

The importance of early detection and treatment of hyperglycaemia is increasingly supported by evidence and has contributed to updates in the diagnosis of GDM and overt diabetes in pregnancy made in the recently published Australian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society (ADIPS) guidelines....
