GPs: jump-start your research with RACGP’s Foundation Grants

The grants allow GPs to conduct research in a wide range of areas.

This month, RACGP launched the inaugural RACGP Foundation Harry Nespolon Research Grant, named in honour of the late Dr Harry Nespolon, who served as RACGP president since 2018. The grants aim to fund research focused on the wellbeing of GPs, a central theme advocated by Dr Nespolon.

The grant provides up to $60,000 for a period of 12 months. Projects within this scheme are encouraged to focus into the wellbeing of general practitioners and/or general practitioners in training. Potential topics may include factors that support the wellbeing of general practitioners, GP self-care, or peer support.

If this is not your cup of tea, RACGP has many other grant schemes, with different focus and award limits, including grants for the use and/or implementation of guidelines in general practice, diabetes research, health services issues, projects with the potential of practical implementation into general practice, travel grants, and many others. For more details about specific eligibility and selection criteria for each grant head to the RACGP website.

Some examples of previous successful grant proposals include:

  • Prof Lisa Amir ($45,000) Project title – Understanding antibiotic prescribing for mastitis in breastfeeding women: a mixed method study.
  • Dr Danielle Butler ($50,000) Project title – The effect of COVID-19 and the introduction of temporary telehealth items on use and costs of GP services: a whole-of-population linked data study.
