Royal Perth Hospital is offering an innovative new way to provide care for patients throughout the hospital.
HIVE or ‘Health in a Virtual Environment’ is a novel remote monitoring tool developed by East Metropolitan Health Service (EMHS) – the first of its kind in Western Australia.
HIVE is currently being implemented at Royal Perth Hospital, where it is staffed by clinical experts and provides 24/7 monitoring for most vulnerable patients.
How does it work?
HIVE is a platform powered by artificial intelligence that aims to detect the earliest signs of clinical deterioration in vulnerable patients. But HIVE is not a stand-alone system, as it is backed by a team of nurses and doctors, who work alongside HIVE. The system essentially provides nurses and clinicians a second set of eyes, to detect the earliest signs of vitals worsening. HIVE also includes a two-way audio-visual system, that allows for communication with the patient and the rest of the ward.
A research opportunity
For clinicians wanting to jump into research, HIVE offers a unique opportunity to address a wide range of topics. EMHS is currently looking for opportunities to collaborate with staff, universities and research bodies across WA to pursue research and evaluation projects in these areas:
- artificial intelligence
- big data
- change management
- clinical studies
- data science and data analytics
- digital age and the workplace
- future way of working
- health economics
- healthcare
- implementation science
- organisational behaviour and psychology.
