Identifying alcohol misuse in primary care

Alcohol misuse remains pervasive and frequently under-recognised in Australian primary care. Patients often present with disease, injury, or reduced quality of life linked to alcohol, yet may not identify their drinking as problematic.

Shame, embarrassment, or fear of judgement can limit disclosure, meaning alcohol-related harm is often hidden behind presentations that appear unrelated. 

General practitioners are uniquely positioned to identify early risk and intervene before harm escalates. By noticing subtle cues and exploring them respectfully and safely, primary care can alter trajectories...
