Ovarian cysts are a common finding on ultrasounds of the female pelvis. Although the term sparks fear and anxiety, the vast majority of ovarian cysts are benign, and many do not require surgery.
A thorough history, combined with an analysis of the ultrasound findings, can often diagnose the cyst type, allay anxiety and help with decision-making about the next steps, even before referral to a gynaecologist.
