Hallucinogens are a diverse group of drugs that includes certain mushrooms, as well as chemicals like lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), and phenylcyclohexyl piperidine (PCP). These drugs have been shown to cause an alteration in perception, thought, and/or mood. Despite their name, most hallucinogens do not consistently cause hallucinations.

Magic mushrooms or any drugs containing psilocybin are not currently permitted in Australia. They remain prohibited (Schedule 9) substances, although TGA is currently seeking further advice on the matter and research is on its in way in Australia.

Hallucinogens are currently illegal in Australia, but despite the restrictions, people manage to get their hands on illegal doses of these magic mushrooms, sometimes with detrimental effects.
