Meet the doctor: Dr Qurrat Van Den Blink

In Medical Forumโ€™s Meet the doctor series we introduce you to specialists working in WA, the services they provide and what they can offer your patients.

What is your area of practice?

I am a consultant radiation oncologist in full-time private practice in Perth, seeing patients at GenesisCare Joondalup, Wembley and Murdoch.

My clinical practice focuses on lung cancer, head and neck malignancies, breast and skin cancers, and the management of oligometastatic disease. Alongside malignant conditions, I also treat selected benign diseases where there is emerging evidence for the use of radiotherapy, including inflammatory and degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis.

I have a strong interest in technically complex radiotherapy and the application of advanced techniques to improve treatment precision, safety and patient outcomes.

Where did you train?

I completed my medical degree at the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom in 2003, followed by physician training and specialist training in Clinical Oncology at The Christie Hospital in Manchester and Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

In 2013, I undertook an international fellowship at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, with a focus on advanced and stereotactic radiotherapy techniques.

After relocating to Australia in 2020, I completed fellowships at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth and Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) in 2022.

A: Radiotherapy contours (blue/pink) for a post-operative oral cavity head and neck cancer.
B: Radiotherapy plan delivering high dose to planned volume with lower and avoidance areas including parotid glands (brown and yellow contours).

What procedural services do you offer?

I specialise in modern external beam radiotherapy, including intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SABR), particularly for lung cancers and oligometastatic disease.

I also have extensive experience in the management of head and neck cancers and in delivering technically complex treatments where accurate target definition, motion management and image guidance are critical to safe and effective radiotherapy.

How is your service different?

My practice is holistic and combines high-level technical expertise with a strong emphasis on collaboration and continuity of care. I am actively involved in lung and head and neck specialist groups, contributing to protocol development, quality assurance and multidisciplinary care pathways.

A key focus of my work is raising awareness of the evolving role of radiotherapy as a modern, effective treatment option across a range of cancers and disease stages. I am involved with Targeting Cancer, an initiative aimed at improving understanding of radiation therapy among patients, clinicians and the wider health community.

Through education and professional engagement, I aim to support informed referral pathways and ensure radiotherapy is appropriately considered within multidisciplinary cancer care.

I place particular importance on clear communication, thoughtful treatment planning and close collaboration with referring doctors, ensuring care is well coordinated from diagnosis through treatment.
