Dr Neale Fong has been appointed managing director of the Peel Health Campus operated by Health Solutions (WA) Pty Ltd. The HDWA chairman Mr Mark Stowell said Dr Fong would oversee the proposed $75 million expansion of the campus, which is currently awaiting government approval.
Last month the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) announced that it will not oppose the proposed acquisition by Sonic Healthcare Ltd of Healthscope Ltd’s pathology business in WA. However, the ACCC will oppose Sonic’s acquisition of Healthscope’s Queensland operation. In September, Sonic terminated its proposal to acquire Healthscope’s pathology business in NSW/ACT.
Dr Tobias Strunk from UWA’s Centre for Neonatal Research and Education has been awarded a $74,945 grant from Ramaciotti Foundations to explore the origin and development of antimicrobial proteins and peptides (APP) in premature babies and understand how these relate to the risk of life-threatening infections. Dr Alex Hewitt from the Lions Eye Institute has been awarded $70,000 for research into the genetics of glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide
The Boab Health Services in Broome has won the WA School of Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences Award for excellence in rural and remote mental health at the Mental Health Good Outcomes Awards. The Freedom Centre has won the WA Equal Opportunity Commissioner Award for human rights, equity and diversity in mental health.
Coral Bay’s sole health practitioner, Kristy Cooper, has been named WA’s 2012 Nurse of the Year and UWA A/Prof Rosemary Saunders has also been recognised for her outstanding contribution to the education of nurses at the annual WA Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards last month.
