Mark the date: WA Rural Health Conference

The conference will focus on what we have learned from the recent disasters that have impacted both Australia and the world and how we can prepare for the future.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we live, work and function, and continues to affect the lives of millions of people around the world. There is an urgent need to gain a better understanding of how to respond to this and any future pandemic.

With this goal in mind, Rural Health West is focusing their flagship annual conference on the theme “lessons learnt from past disasters”. The conference will take place 27-28 March at the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre and is delivered in partnership with WA Country Health Service, through the Better Medical Care Initiative.

Following a year’s hiatus due to COVID-19, Rural Health West is now bringing over 230 health professionals from across Australia, for a much-welcomed face to face gathering.

The 2021 conference, “theme of lessons learnt from past disasters”, will focus on what we have learned from the recent disasters, including COVID-19, but also focusing more broadly on managing health care during times of crisis. For example, the conference will focus on dealing with the aftermath of natural disasters such as bushfires and floods. Delegates will share their ideas and challenges with forward thinkers and will also have the opportunity to network with colleagues. Clinical updates and workshops will cover topics relevant to the rural workforce.

The conference boasts a respectable line-up of keynote speakers including:

  • Adjunct Professor Ruth Stewart – National Rural Health Commissioner, who will speak about “The role of rural health professionals in disaster preparedness”.
  • Commissioner Darren Klemm AFSM – Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner, who will give a talk about “Emergency management in rural Western Australia”
  • Rabia Siddique – Australian criminal and human rights lawyer, retired British Army officer, former terrorism and war crimes prosecutor, international humanitarian, hostage survivor and professional speaker. Dr Siddique’s talk is entitled: “ Leading under pressure”.

The conference will also include a virtual component for each of the keynote presenters plus a number of the conference sessions, which will be livestreamed over the weekend. For the full list of livestreamed presentations, go to the livestream registration page at:
