Perth’s own plastic and reconstructive surgeon and world-leading burns specialist Professor Fiona Wood has been honoured on a global stage.
Professor Fiona Wood has been presented with the American Burn Associationโs (ABA) Lifetime Achievement Award.
The award, in recognition of her more than three decades as a burns surgeon and researcher, was presented in Orlando, Florida at the ABA 2026 Annual Meeting.
As Director of the Burns Service of Western Australia she has led the service to be recognised internationally as a leader in burns care.
Professor Wood is well known for developing a spray-on skin solution which was used to treat patients from the 2002 Bali bombings.

The ABA described Professor Wood as “a pioneer in innovation” for the spray-on skin technique she co-invented transforming burn care worldwide.
As well as being a consultant plastic surgeon at Fiona Stanley Hospital and Perth Children’s Hospital, she is the co-founder of the first skin cell laboratory in WA; Winthrop Professor in the School of Surgery at UWA; and co-founder of the Fiona Wood Foundation.
Professor Wood said the core of her work was treating patients suffering burn injury and to have done that for thousands of people was a privilege.
“In addition, I have had the privilege to work with many amazing clinicians and scientists over the years,” she said.
โI am honoured to be recognised by the American Burn Association. This reflects a lifetime of work, and with that comes a responsibility to continue advancing care and supporting the next generation of clinicians and researchers who will lead the future of this field.”
Earlier this year the Fiona Wood Foundation announced it would be involved in the establishment of a WA Comprehensive Centre for Childhood Burns.
