Event: Research week 2021

St John of God Subiaco Hospital’s annual Research Week will take place 4 to 9 September 2021.


Doctors, health care providers and patients are welcome to attend St John of God Subiaco Hospital’s annual Research Week. Held from Saturday 4 – Thursday 9 September 2021, the event will host a broad range of in-person and online events, as well as current research, new discoveries, treatments and case studies.

The events that will take place include:

  • Familial breast and ovarian cancer information day – Saturday 4 September. The event will hold presentations from leading experts, including:
    • Breast reconstruction surgery, by Dr Lip Teh
    • Update on the management of women at high risk of ovarian cancer, by Dr Paul Cohen
    • Trimodal prehabilitation for people who are at high risk of breast cancer due to a gene mutation, by Dr Caitlin Fox-Harding
    • Audience exercise session, by Ms Christine Kudiarasu
    • It’s not (just) about the breast. The road less walked, by Ms Petrina Burnett
    • Update on kConFab and latest research (virtual Q&A session), by A/Prof Heather Thorne
    • Sex after risk reducing surgery for breast and ovarian cancer, by Ms Helena Green
    • Update on the management of women at high risk of breast cancer, by Prof Christobel Saunders AO and Dr Helen Ballal
    • Life after risk reducing surgery for ovarian cancer and the role of HRT, by Dr Lesley Ramage
    • Advances in the genetics of breast and ovarian cancer, by A/Prof Nicholas Pachter
  • Creating hope & healing during the COVID-19 pandemic – Monday 6 September. This event will provide an update of St John of God Health Care Art and Health programs, including patient stories from the art and music therapy program.
  • Panel discussion: Curing COVID-19 & testing multiple treatments simultaneously – Monday 6 The event will host a panel of experts from the fields of infectious disease, intensive care and respiratory specialists.
  • Junior medical officer showcase – Tuesday 7 September. St John of God Subiaco Hospital junior doctors will share informative presentations on patient case studies and medical findings.
  • Preventing preterm & early term births in Australia – Wednesday 8 September. Keynote speaker Prof John Newnham AM, 2020 Senior Australian of the Year. Prof Newnham will deliver a presentation about preventing pre-term and early term birth in Australia.
  • Panel discussion: Guardianship & administration amendment (medical research) act 2020 – Thursday 9 September. A panel of experts will discuss the key features and principles underlying the new Western Australian GAA (Medical Research) Act 2020 and how it is supporting the safe conduct of research with and about those with impaired capacity to consent. The discussion will include real life examples of its practical application in research.
